Kimberly Akimbo: A Celebration of Youth and Resilience
REVIEW: KIMBERLY AKIMBO
BY RYAN M. LUEVANO
As the curtain rises on the highly anticipated Los Angeles premiere of Kimberly Akimbo, audiences are in for a treat with this remarkable musical that has captured hearts and accolades alike. Winner of five Tony Awards in 2023, including the coveted Best Musical, Kimberly Akimbo has been hailed as the standout production of its season, earning critical acclaim for its poignant storytelling and vibrant score. The musical plays at the Hollywood Pantages Theatre from October 15 to November 3, 2024, this limited engagement promises to deliver an unforgettable theatrical experience. Following its run in Los Angeles, the production will continue to enchant Southern California audiences at the Segerstrom Center for the Arts in Costa Mesa from January 21 to February 2, 2025.
The story of Kimberly Akimbo is based on a play by David Lindsay-Abaire. It follows the life of a lonely teenage girl, Kimberly Levaco, who suffers from a condition similar to progeria, causing her to age rapidly and appear as an elderly woman. This musical is a coming-of-age story that chronicles Kimberly’s journey to embrace life to the fullest despite her condition. The collaboration between David Lindsay-Abaire (lyrics and book) and Jeanine Tesori (music) creates a musical that is both intelligent and deeply moving–contemporary musical theater telling at its finest.
Although the story of the show lacks the dramatic momentum of a traditional musical, it does nicely transport us back to the nostalgia of the pre-cellphone era, evoking the tone of such films as Juno, Lady Bird, the Edge of Seventeen, and Napoleon Dynamite. It’s truly a show about the journey, not the destination. Lindsay-Abaire’s lyrics are rhythmic and somewhat clunky adding to the teenage angst of the show. Tesori’s music also follows this pattern, with a strong emphasis on rhythm rather than melody, creating a more conversational feel. While I typically prefer musicals with more substantial melodies to delve into, this stylistic choice effectively unifies the show and maintains its lively pace.
Director Jessica Stone’s meticulous attention to detail and powerful artistic vision enabled her to skillfully capture the essence of every moment. Whether it was a gripping confrontation or a heartfelt exchange, Stone’s direction consistently energized the material. Her seamless transitions between scenes, all while maintaining a cohesive visual style with picturesque moments ensured that the performance was both swift and focused.
Carolee Carmelo (Kimberly) rises to the occasion to portray an effervescent teenager with a contagious energy that is palpable and exciting. Her performance captures the exuberance and enthusiasm of youth, bringing a vibrant and dynamic presence to the character. Carmelo’s portrayal is filled with a sense of joy and liveliness that adds depth and authenticity to the role, making her a captivating and engaging presence on stage. Miguel Gil (Seth), brings Kimberly’s doe-eyed, lovable, and nerdy love interest to life with an irresistible charm. His scenes are filled with natural sweetness, charm, and cuteness–we are completely smitten with his portrayal and find ourselves eagerly anticipating his every-stage appearance.
The rest of the musical cast each offers fantastic performances and quirks that make them a pleasure to watch on stage. From the energetic ensemble dancers to the powerful vocalists, every member of the cast brings something unique and captivating to the production.
Kimberly Akimbo is a must-see musical that beautifully intertwines humor and heart, offering a poignant exploration of youth and resilience. With its clever lyrics, vibrant performances, and a nostalgic nod to simpler times, this production captures the essence of what it means to embrace life despite its challenges.
