A ROYAL ROMP AT THE AHMANSON
REVIEW: ONCE UPON A MATTRESS
BY RYAN M. LUEVANO
It’s the perfect season for a Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale! The Ahmanson Theatre is currently showing the classic 1960s musical Once Upon a Mattress, which is a funny adaptation of the fairy tale “The Princess and the Pea.” The musical features the legendary musical theatre performer Sutton Foster (from The Drowsy Chaperone and The Music Man) as Princess Winnifred. This production is directed by Lear deBessonet (who was nominated for a Tony Award for Into the Woods), the Artistic Director of Encores! The story has been adapted by Amy Sherman-Palladino (the creator of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel). Once Upon a Mattress tells the tale of an unapologetic and free-spirited Princess Winnifred, who must prove herself to the queen to marry the prince.
This production of Once Upon a Mattress is a delightful romp, brimming with heart and humor from beginning to end. Amy Sherman-Palladino’s adaptation infuses the classic tale with sharp, contemporary wit and vaudevillian flair, creating a wonderfully whimsical experience for audiences. The characters are crafted with genuine comedic specificity and depth, allowing the talented cast to fully embrace their roles and shine. Under the direction of Lear deBessonet, the show unfolds like a vibrant fairy tale, bursting with energy and laughter. Despite its 2-hour and 25-minute runtime, the pacing is brisk, seamlessly transitioning from one scene to the next, each filled with comedic gems and heartfelt moments. The set and costumes are a feast for the eyes, awash in vibrant pastels that complement the playful antics of the performers. Overall, this production is a joyous carnival ride that leaves audiences wanting to savor every moment.
The cast of Once Upon a Mattress is a remarkable ensemble that captivates from start to finish. At the helm is the incomparable Sutton Foster, whose portrayal of Princess Winnifred is a delightful blend of unabashed humor and charming innocence, crafting a truly well-rounded heroine. Foster shines as a master of physical comedy, evoking the spirit of legends like Lucille Ball, Carol Burnett, and Fannie Brice with her hilarious antics. Her renditions of Shy and Happily Ever After are nothing short of Sutton Foster gold. Michale Urie as Prince Dauntless matches her energy with a comedic performance that leaves the audience in stitches—his goofy, endearing demeanor is a joy to behold. Ana Gasteyer steals scenes as the relentlessly overbearing Queen Aggravain, embodying a comedic force that is both formidable and entertaining. Meanwhile, David Patrick Kelly, as King Sextimus the Silent, infuses the role with an infectious energy that resonates throughout the performance, proving that silence can indeed speak volumes.
Seeing a classic musical like Once Upon a Mattress is always a delightful experience, especially when it features the vibrant sound of a full orchestra. In this particular production, the orchestra, skillfully led by Annbritt deChateau, takes center stage, filling the theater with rich, melodic harmonies and jazzy rhythms that elevate the entire performance. Effect artist Skylar Fox deserves special mention for infusing the production with a sense of magic and wonder, employing clever use of physical comedy and visual effects, which add layers of humor and whimsy to the narrative.
