The stagecraft in Cursed Child is nothing short of remarkable. Director John Tiffany opts for traditional theatrical techniques rather than relying heavily on modern technological effects, which lends the production a timeless quality. When technology does make an appearance, it strikes like a flash of lightning—brief yet breathtaking. This commitment to classic stagecraft is mirrored throughout the entire production. Christine Jones’s set design features stylized, realistic backdrops that eschew artificial projections, creating a tangible world for the audience. The transitions between scenes are transformed into a graceful modern ballet, as actors move set pieces on and off stage in shadow. These typically overlooked moments are elevated by movement director Steven Hoggett‘s contemporary choreography, seamlessly guiding us through the narrative with elegance and fluidity.

In the world of Harry Potter, magic is essential, and this production delivers it in abundance. The magic here is breathtaking. Following suit with Tiffany’s vision for a classic theatre piece, illusions and magic consultant Jamie Harrison accomplished quick changes, disappearances/appearances, levitation, transportation, and transformation, utilizing traditional magic techniques right out of the repertoire of Houdini, Blackstone, and Copperfield’s playbook. For the more spectacular moments, he seamlessly integrates cutting-edge technology, elevating the experience to new heights. These stunning sequences are not to be missed—witnessing them firsthand is a must.

Emmet Smith shines as the troubled yet earnest Albus Potter, capturing the audience’s empathy from his very first moment on stage. His portrayal is both authentic and relatable, forging genuine connections with his character and those around him. Aidan Close, as Scorpius Malfoy, stands out with his bubbly and Dewey-eyed interpretation, providing a refreshing contrast to his father’s stoic demeanor. Close’s infectious charm consistently elevates every scene he graces. The adult characters are equally well-represented, embodying the beloved figures that fans have cherished over the years, making them feel like seeing old friends once again.
