From Screen to Stage: The Gift of “A Christmas Story, The Musical”
BY RYAN M. LUEVANO
In the heart of Los Angeles, the dazzling lights of the theater are set to ignite as the celebrated songwriting duo, Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, known for their triumphs like the Tony Award-winning “Dear Evan Hansen,” the Academy Award for “La La Land,” and the Golden Globe for “The Greatest Showman,” present a festive spectacle that promises to become a new holiday tradition. Their latest creation, “A Christmas Story, The Musical,” transforms the beloved 1983 movie into a whimsical and nostalgic stage production. The Ahmanson Theatre, adorned with seasonal cheer, is set to host this special production exclusively for the City of Angels from December 5th to 31st.
Under the adept direction of Matt Lenz, the production achieves a remarkable equilibrium in pacing, smoothly guiding the audience through each scene. Lenz’s keen eye ensures that each musical number concludes with a captivating visual composition, presenting the audience with picture-perfect tableaux that linger in the memory like a postcard. His skill in conceptualizing the action on stage not only engages the audience but also transforms the performance into a visually enchanting experience.
Elevating the visual grandeur of the production is Walt Spangler’s intricate set design, featuring a central piece the Parker House—a colossal dollhouse that seemingly extends into the audience. Complementing this focal point are ingenious set pieces mirroring iconic elements from the film, including the flagpole, the family car, and the department store. Spangler’s artistry brings these familiar elements to life, enhancing the immersive and nostalgic experience for the audience.
While I’ve been acquainted with the Broadway cast recording, witnessing the live performance of A Christmas Story, The Musical brought a delightful revelation— an abundance of captivating dance sequences. The dance arrangements, a joy to the ears, were elevated to a mesmerizing spectacle by Warren Carlyle’s brilliant choreography. Carlyle’s mastery shines through in numbers like “Ralphie to the Rescue,” “A Major Award,” and “Sticky Situation,” each building up to a thrilling finale. The visual splendor, reminiscent of Busby Berkeley, adds an extra layer of excitement and Broadway nostalgia. The tap solo by Addalie Burns’ stands out as a particularly impressive feat.
Replacing the film’s voice-over is the charismatic radio host and narrator, Chris Carsten, who effortlessly embodies the character of Jean Shepherd. Carsten’s amiable personality and soothing voice create an experience akin to settling in front of a warm fire, immersing the audience in the nostalgic ambiance of a 1940s radio broadcast. Kai Edgar, embodying Ralphie, is a boundless well of energy and talent—a triple threat that brings joy to every scene. Eric Peterson, a comedic force, delivers a performance that seamlessly blends Broadway finesse with sitcom charm. Sabrina Sloan, in her role, achieves perfection, with her voice shining in numbers like “What a Mother Does” and “Just Like That.”
A Christmas Story is a delightful holiday musical extravaganza, capturing the essence of the season with its heartwarming narrative and vibrant performances. With a perfect blend of nostalgia, humor, and an enchanting musical score, the production brings the beloved 1983 film to life on stage. Whether you’re relishing the joy of the season with family or seeking a festive outing, this musical offers a magical experience that will leave audiences of all ages with a warm and lasting holiday spirit. It truly stands as a must-see, ushering in the joyous festivities in perfect harmony for the entire family.
