FUNNY GIRL, STILL THE MUSICAL THAT MAKE US SMILE
BY RYAN M. LUEVANO
Get ready to be dazzled by the sensational Broadway revival of “Funny Girl” at the Ahmanson Theatre in Los Angeles. This limited four-week engagement from April 2 to April 28, 2024, is a must-see for musical theater lovers. With a star-studded cast including Grammy Award-winning singer-songwriter Melissa Manchester as Mrs. Brice and rising star Katerina McCrimmon as Fanny Brice, this production is sure to captivate audiences. Featuring iconic songs like Don’t Rain On My Parade and People, “Funny Girl” tells the bittersweet story of Fanny Brice’s rise to stardom and her journey to becoming one of Broadway’s most beloved performers.
David Zinn’s set design for the show was truly stunning. He used scenic design techniques from the era of the show, which gave it a nostalgic look and feel. Unlike many modern productions, there were no projections used in this show. Instead, beautifully designed backdrops descended from the rafters, transporting the audience to a different time and place with each change of scenery. Each backdrop was like a work of art in itself, with intricate details and vibrant colors that brought the stage to life. The costumes designed by Susan Hilferty were the perfect complement to the nostalgic scenery. From lavish follies headdresses to colorful dance ensemble wear, each costume was carefully crafted to evoke the spirit of the 1920s theatre. The unique character pieces and Fanny’s various outfits added even more color and vibrancy to the production, making it a true feast for the eyes. Together, Zinn’s set design and Hilferty’s costumes created a world on stage that was both beautiful and immersive. It was clear that every detail had been carefully considered and executed with precision, resulting in a production that was truly unforgettable.
Following the lead of the Styne’s driving and up-tempo score the choreography by Ellenore Scott was a feast of rhythm and awe. The rhythm and movement of the vaudeville numbers were a treat to watch, with each one being a delight in its own right. From the catchy beats of “Cornet Man” to the upbeat tempo of “Henry Street,” and the romantic charm of “His Love Makes Me Beautiful” and “Sadie, Sadie,” every number was splendidly executed. The tap dance numbers by Ayodele Casel added to the excitement and energy of the performance, leaving the audience in awe.
“Funny Girl” is a musical that has stood the test of time, and the recent production featuring Katerina McCrimmon as Fanny Brice is no exception. McCrimmon’s performance is nothing short of exceptional, as she brings both humor and heart to the role. She goes beyond just playing a funny character and brings depth and emotion to the role. McCrimmon effortlessly delivers the hilarious stage performances that Brice was famous for, while also highlighting her inner struggles with her husband. Additionally, McCrimmon’s vocal range is impressive as she flawlessly performs comedic songs like “Cornet Man” and “Rat-Tat-Tat-Tat,” as well as moving ballads like “People” and “The Music That Makes Me Dance.” Her rendition of “Don’t Rain on My Parade” is particularly powerful. Melissa Manchester’s portrayal of Mrs. Brice is also noteworthy, as she delivers every comedic line with ease and charm. Izaiah Montaque Harris, who plays Eddie Ryan, is another audience favorite due to his incredible tap-dancing skills and lovable character as Fanny’s sidekick.
The beloved musical “Funny Girl” has recently undergone a facelift, and it suits her well. Harvey Fierstein, who has revised the book, has given the show a more streamlined and nuanced feel, particularly in the character of Arnstein. To complement these changes, some songs have been added and removed. Most notably the song “Find Yourself a Man” was removed from Act II and replaced with a song for Arnstein, “Temporary Arrangement.” The song “You’re a Funny Girl” was also added for Arnstein’s character. While the new songs may not match the memorable melodies of Jule Styne’s original score, they do serve to add depth to Arnstein’s character and make him more relatable. The updated orchestrations by Chris Walker also add a fresh twist to the classic tunes, softening the ballads while still maintaining the jazzy Broadway-style numbers that audiences know and love. Overall, the facelift given to Funny Girl has been a success, and fans of the show will surely appreciate these new additions.
Funny Girl at the Ahmanson Theatre is an absolute must-see for aficionados of musical theater. Boasting a cast of luminaries, breathtaking set design, lively costumes, and enthralling choreography, this production is a veritable feast for the senses. Katerina McCrimmon’s outstanding portrayal of Fanny Brice, coupled with the fresh book and orchestrations, infuse this cherished musical with renewed vitality. From the iconic “Don’t Rain on My Parade” to the heart-wrenching “People,” the music of “Funny Girl” will stay with you long after the final curtain call.
