GAYS, GUTS, AND GLAMOR AT LA CAGE AUX FOLLES
REVIEW: LA CAGE AUX FOLLES
BY RYAN M. LUEVANO
Step into the glamorous world of Saint-Tropez Pasadena with the Pasadena Playhouse‘s dazzling new production of La Cage aux Folles. Directed by Sam Pinkleton, this captivating show features a book by Harvey Fierstein, music and lyrics by Jerry Herman, and is based on the play by Jean Poiret. The talented cast is led by Cheyenne Jackson (from American Horror Story) as Georges and Tony Nominee Kevin Cahoon (known for Broadway’s Shucked) as Albin. Don’t miss this fabulous production, running now through December 15th.
Many people know the film The Birdcage, and many know the tuneful music by Jerry Herman that is the heartbeat of the show. However, experiencing the stage musical La Cage aux Folles is a rare and delightful opportunity. This musical is a shining example of expertly crafted musical theatre, featuring all the essential elements: love, drama, conflict, strong characters, a compelling storyline, and a brilliant score. The production at the Pasadena Playhouse has breathed new life into this fantastic musical, whose message still resonates today: Be proud of who you are and where you come from.
Director Sam Pinkleton skillfully mined every ounce drama, heart, and magnificent spectacle of this classic musical, immersing the audience in the vibrant world of La Cage. Presenting the show as an immersive backstage musical, Pinkelton ensured that every moment was visible to the audience, utilizing every actor on stage in an active state. Furthermore, the presence of actors already on stage allows for a seamless building in musical numbers. This means that the actors can naturally join in any given number, adding to the overall sound of the performance. As a result, no matter where you look on stage, something is always happening, creating a heightened sense of energy throughout the production.
When you imagine a musical set in a drag show theater in Saint-Tropez, you expect it to be flashy, kitschy, and vibrant. That’s exactly what you’ll experience in this production of La Cage—it’s like attending the most elegant drag brunch ever. The costumes designed by David Reynoso are stunning, especially those worn by the Les Cagelles, which are extravagantly eye-catching. Anticipate costumes bursting with color, feathers, patterns, headpieces, sequins, glitter, and glamour. Each performance by the Les Cagelles is a delightful display of energy and flair. The scenic design by David Zinn is equally lavish and practical. Zinn has created a set that functions like a massive, customizable dollhouse that opens up for the audience. In line with Reynoso’s costumes, the walls, curtains, upholstery, furniture, lampshades, and even the floor have been given a technicolor makeover that will surely bring a smile to our faces.
Cheyenne Jackson delivers a delightful and sincere performance as Georges, captivating audiences with his renditions of “Song on the Sand” and “Look Over There,” which are filled with heartfelt emotion that makes us feel as though he is singing directly to us. Kevin Cahoon’s portrayal of the erratic, dramatic, yet well-meaning Albin/Zaza provides a perfect counterbalance to Jackson’s performance, offering an engaging and enthralling multi-comedy performance that never veers into caricature. Cahoon’s character embodies the show’s central theme of “being comfortable in your own skin” with gusto and empathy. The song “I Am What I Am,” the unofficial “gay anthem,” is performed with conviction, heart, and bravura, providing a perfect close to the first act. Ryan J. Haddad’s portrayal of the young adult son, Jean-Michel, is charming and honest, capturing the naivety of the character and making him a relatable victim of love. From the charm song “Anne on My Arm” to the resolute reprise of “Look Over There,” Haddad’s performance draws us in and makes us feel a part of his character’s journey.
The Pasadena Playhouse’s production of La Cage aux Folles is a vibrant celebration of love, identity, and acceptance that resonates deeply with audiences today. With its stunning visuals, heartfelt performances, and a timeless message, this musical is not just a nostalgic trip down memory lane but a powerful reminder of the importance of embracing one’s true self. Under Sam Pinkleton’s expert direction, the cast shines brightly, making this rendition a must-see for both fans of musical theatre and newcomers alike. Don’t miss your chance to experience the joy and exuberance of La Cage aux Folles before it closes on December 15th—it’s an unforgettable theatrical experience that will leave you uplifted and inspired.
